Hull Through Time - A lovely colourful book showcasing Hull past and present.

Kingston upon Hull is a fascinating city and over the last 150 years or so has witnessed great changes. The city centre in the late 1890s was made up of pre Victorian slum houses and tiny narrow streets. In the very last years of the 1890s much of the old city centre was completely demolished and many of the old parts of the city centre have been captured on photographs, some of which are included in this book. Today, the city centre is very modern and boasts three excellent shopping centres as well as the more traditional streets. It also has several museums and William Wilberforce's house, which was the home of the anti slavery campaigner. This excellent book with over 190 photographs shows not only the city centre as it was and how it is today but also some of its environs. It is essential reading for anyone who knows and loves the area. 185 Illustrations.

Book 2

Hull Pubs - The port of Kingston upon Hull is one of England’s most historical and diverse cities, and boasts a wealth of taverns, inns, alehouses and public houses. Most of the older drinking establishments that have survived have stories to tell – frequently quirky or surprising, always interesting and often with nautical links, given the city’s associations over the centuries with the fishing and shipbuilding industries.

Author and historian Paul Chrystal takes the reader on a fascinating tour around some of the watering holes in the city and its surrounding villages, relating historical facts and dubious tales on subjects as diverse as the English Civil War, Philip Larkin, maritime matters and the slave trade. This book explores the histories and secrets, and tells of the many characters that have frequented or run the city’s public houses. Hull Pubs will make locals and visitors alike want to visit at least one one of the city’s venerable old taverns in the year Hull celebrates being UK City of Culture, and long afterwards.

Features many popular Hull pubs including Polar Bear, The Queens, Haworth Arms, The Empress, The Punch Bowl, The Mission, The Bonny Boat, Ye Olde Black Boy, King William, Lion and Key, The George, The Minerva and many more.
